The Project

What is this project all about? That's the key question here. And, after that, why is it important?

In brief, this project takes the long and convoluted history of an individual monument in the centre of modern Rome and examines its relationship with the city around it, from the monument's creation to its current state.

That monument is the Mausoleum of Augustus. This chap on the right (the bigger one, not the cherub). First emperor of Rome, defeater of Mark Antony and Cleopatra, and an all round ambiguous individual. Did he restore the Republic, like he claimed, or did he tear it down to establish a new form of rule based on his own supremacy and dynasty?

We may never know....

Through an examination of how the monument has changed in relation to the world around it, and how the world around it has changed and been changed in response to it, and what nature's role in the monument has been and is now, we can understand how green spaces have historically been incorporated into cities, and why they were removed.
